Social Impact
Social Impact & Special AchievementsCoopaflora is a small and young cooperative, founded by family based producers of mate tea leaves in the municipality of Turvo, state of Paraná, Brazil. The associates are organized in several small and informal producer groups engaged in diversified agroecological activities. These groups are part of the network Ecovida, a participative ecological movement of the southern regions of Brazil. A few bigger farms are part of the cooperative, too. The holdings are located in one of the best preserved areas of the original Atlantic rain forest with high preservation rate of araucaria trees (Araucaria angustifolia).
The cooperative aims to organize and centralize the processing and commercialization of products of the associates, mainly leaves of the mate tree (Ilex paraguariensis) and of the pitanga tree (Eugenia uniflora) and dried medicinal plants. Other products should be added in the future. The cooperative is assisted by the local NGO Instituto Agroflorestal Bernardo Hakvoort – IAF, engaged in preservation of natural habitats in the region. IAF finances part of the staff of the cooperative and is vital for the start-up of the activities of the young organization.
Social organization and life of the associated small holders is well developed. Diversification of production is an important step towards sustainability of economic, environmental and social development for the associates as well as for the cooperative.
