Social Impact
Social Impact & Special AchievementsThe indigenous Aché community are traditional hunters and collectors in the forests. Closer contact with the outside world only started in the 70ies and 80ies of the last century. Due to the lower number of wild animals in the forest, one of the main food resources, they are actually learning to become farmers.
Each family cultivates plants for their daily self consumption such as manioc, groundnuts, maize. The average area per family is between ¼ and ½ ha. Parts of their time is dedicated to the Yerba Mate production which is realized by the whole community. Generated income serves for small community projects.
Since several years Guayaki company has started to support the community and their Yerba Mate production. Negotiations between the community and Guayaki company, which purchases the Yerba Mate, are collective and open meetings where the whole community and Guayaki representatives participate. Prices and premiums are decided and confirmed in a written contract which is valid for ten years.
The company Guayaki contributes herewith effectively to enable the Aché community to sustain their culture through the income generation opportunity with Yerba Mate which enables them to afford costs for which they not had other income sources, and last but not least it contributes to the maintenance of one of the few left areas of primary atlantic forests in Paraguay. Guayaki assists and provides monthly capacity building to the community through one agricultural advisor, support of financing of the project, and support of the local school.
Use of FairTrade Premiumfirst payments are used according to the decisions from the community meeting to cover costs for energy use, medical health and to purchase additional food for the whole community. In future it is planned to improve housing and small infrastructure.
